Nehru to Modi: All Prime Ministers of India

Jawaharlal Nehru (1947 to 1964)

One of the most prominent leaders of the Indian independence movement and the first Prime Minister of the country, Nehru was born in Prayagraj (then called Allahabad) on November 14, 1889. Behind them as a sovereign, socialist, secular and democratic form of India, they are considered architect. Nehru's inauguration "Trieste Destinini" - given to Midnight on August 14, 1947, is still considered to be one of the most speeches of all time. Nehru died on 27 May 1964 at the age of 74.



Gulzari Lal Nanda (1964 and 1966) 

 

Born on July 4, 1898 in Sialkot (now in Pakistan), Nanda is remembered most as an economist who worked on labor issues. The country's first caretaker prime minister was. He served two brief spells - once in 1964 after Nehru's death in 1964, and for the second time in 1966 after Lal Bahadur Shastri. On January 15, 1998, Nanda passed away at 99 years of age.



Lal Bahadur Shastri (1964 to 1966)

Shastri gave a slogan "Jai Jawan Jai Kisan" and led the country through the 1965 Indo-Pak war. Born on October 2, 1904 in Mughalsarai, he was senior leader of the Indian National Congress and was one of the prominent faces of the National Liberation War. Shastri died on January 11, 1966, at the age of 61.


Indira Gandhi (1966 to 1977, 1980 to 1984) 

India's first woman Prime Minister was born on 19th 1917 in Prayagraj (then called Allahabad). He twice served as the leader of the country. The Emergency was in his time. On October 31, 1984, he was assassinated at the age of 66.









Morarji Desai (1977 to 1979)

Desai, a former minister of finance and home affairs, was born on February 29, 1896 in the village of Bhadeli. Originally a member of the Indian National Congress (INC). Backed by the coalition with the Janata Party, the first non-Congress Prime Minister Desai died at the age of 99 on April 10, 1995.



Charan Singh (1979 to 1980) 

 

Born in Noorpur, Singh grew up in a farmer's family. He took several legislative and ministerial positions in his career, including in charge of justice and information as a cabinet minister and working for revenue and agriculture. In Uttar Pradesh, he is most remembered for land reform and he is remembered for the land under the Land Holding Act of 1960. Singh died on May 29, 1987 at the age of 84.



Rajiv Gandhi (1984 to 1989)

Rajiv came to politics after his mother's death Born on August 20, 1944 in Mumbai (then Bombay), Rajeev was reluctant to enter politics.However, after the death of his brother Sanjay in an air crash in 1980, he was asked to do so. While riding the wave of sympathy, the Congress led by Gandhi won the record of 401 out of 508 seats in the 1984 elections. His struggle continued with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), which killed him on May 21, 1991 at the age of 46.



V. P. Singh (1989 to 1990) 

Remembered for the implementation of the Mandal Commission report for backward classes, Singh was born on June 25, 1931 in Prayagraj (then called Allahabad). He worked as defense and finance minister before becoming the Prime Minister. He died on November 27, 2008 at the age of 77.






Chandra Shekhar (1990 to 1991)

He was a member of Shekhar Rajya Sabha (1962-67) and Lok Sabha (1977-79, 1980-84 and 1989-90), born in a family of farmers in Ibrahimpati on July 1, 1927. He was also Defense and Home Minister in the Congress (during Indira Gandhi's reign) and the Janata Party (which was the coalition government with Desai in the form of Prime Minister). He died on July 8, 2007 at the age of 80.




P V Narasimha Rao (1991 to 1996) 

Born at Karimnagar on June 28, 1921, Rao entered politics as a student worker and after serving for two decades in the Andhra Pradesh state assembly, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi were members of the Lok Sabha in both the governments. As Prime Minister, his time was marked by liberalizing the economy and efforts to keep the foundation of progressive economic reforms. Rao died on December 23, 2004 at 83 years of age.

 

 

Atal Bihari Vajpayee (1996, 1998 to 2004)

Vajpayee was sworn in office for the first time in May, 1996, the only Prime Minister to serve in three working hours. However, his government failed to get the support of the opposition and was dissolved after only 13 days. He strengthened his position in the next election and became the first non-Congress leader for a five-year term. He passed away on August 16, 2018 at 93 years of age.

HD Deve Gowda (1996 to 1997) 

Knowing as a supporter of socio-economic development, independence and equality, Deve Gowda remained close to the agricultural community during his tenure. Born on January 18, 1933 in Haranahalli village, he served as Chief Minister of Karnataka from 1994 to 1996 and also as Home Minister in 1996.





IK Gujral (1997 to 1998)

The only third prime minister to be elected from the Rajya Sabha (after Indira Gandhi and Deve Gowda), Gujral was born on December 4, 1919 in Jhelum (now in Pakistan). Born in the family of freedom fighters, Gujral worked as the Indian Ambassador to the former Soviet Union. Gujral died on November 30, 2012 at 92 years of age.



Manmohan Singh (2004 to 2014)

The first Sikh to serve as Prime Minister. On September 26, 1932, Ghah (now in Pakistan) was born. He served as the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Chief of Planning Commission and Finance Minister.





Narendra Modi (2014-) 

 

Born on 17 September 1950 in Vadnagar, Modi was the first Chief Minister of Gujarat. BJP led by Modi won the 2014 general election. In 2016, his government monetized notes worth INR 500 and INR 1000 with the aim of curbing the use of corruption and counterfeit currency
